Economics of Cancer

"There is nothing else in the health-care field that can do
what a good prescription drug can do--on the money side.
It is a business to be envied by all." --New York Times, July 28, 1989

Economics, as much as medical science, drives the direction of cancer research and treatment. This thesis, which was controversial when I first stated it in The Cancer Syndrome, has since become commonplace, and hardly worth arguing.

One of the reasons I started The Cancer Chronicles, however, was to provide a kind of running commentary, an instant update, on the link between business and cancer. Here are ten articles from The Cancer Chronicles on how economics and cancer interact:

  • Mergermania (1989)
  • Cancer Market Booms (1990)
  • Fierce Competition (1990)
  • FDA and IL-12 (1992)
  • Drug 'Majors' (1993)
  • Asian Herb Market (1994)
  • Medimmune's Plunge (1994)
  • NCI-BMS Taxol Deal (1994)
  • Pharmacia and Upjohn Merge (1995)
  • CA Hospitals Organize (1995)
  • Right Heart Catheterization (1997)
