THIS WEEK'S QUESTIONQ. What is Ukrain?
A. Ukrain is a combination of an herbal extract and chemotherapy. There is a considerable amount of research behind it. It was first developed in 1978 by Dr. J. Wassyl Nowicky [pronounced "No-VIT-skee"],of Vienna and unveiled at the 13th International Congress of Chemotherapy in August 1983. Ukrain is said to be a semisynthetic "conjugate" of an herb called the Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus L.) and the "chemo" drug, thiotepa. Greater celandine is a well known folk rememdy for cancer. An anticancer formula published in the Virginia Almanac of 1754 states, "Take a peck of garden sorrel, and better than half as much celandine..." Mrs. Johnson won a £100 contest prize from the Virginia House of Burgesses for this recipe.Greater celandine contains alkaloids, including at least one, chelidonine, which has anticancer potential. But consumed by itself it can be irritating, even quite toxic. In my opinion, the herb is too dangerous to be used as self-medication. Purified Ukrain is said to be relatively non-toxic. Investigation of Ukrain is now underway not just in Austria, but at many other institutions in Canada, France, Germany the Netherlands, Switzerland, and even Thailand and Swaziland. Yet it is extremely unlikely one will hear about this from one's oncologist, especially in North America. Ukrain is patented (U.S. 2,670,347; Eur. 0083600) and has been the subject of many scientific papers. It is an unconventional treatment with an unusual amount of research behind it. There is a chapter on Ukrain in my book, Herbs Against Cancer, which you can order by clicking here.
