Ralph Moss Question of 10/15/99--IP-6 AND LIVER CANCER

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION

Q. Is IP-6 a valid new approach to cancer, especially liver cancer?

A. IP-6 is a very promising new approach. Other names for this carbohydrate are inositol hexaphosphate or phytic acid. IP-6 is found in corn at up to 6.4 percent, as well as sesame, wheat, beans, rice, etc. However, it is found in the bran of the seeds, and thus milling largely removes it from the American diet.

I have often spoken about the lack of data for many touted "cancer cures." IP-6 presents a refreshing contrast. There are about two dozen scientific articles on its role as an anticancer agent. Most of this work was done by pathologist AbulKalam Shamsuddin, MD, PhD, a professor at the University of Maryland. I have met Dr. Shamsuddin and think highly of him and his efforts.

A POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT

In 1985, Dr. Ernst Graf suggested that IP-6 was a powerful antioxidant that could possibly prevent colon cancer. Dr. Shamusuddin then demonstrated that IP-6 did inhibit cancer formation. For reasons I don't quite understand, the National Cancer Institute has been unable to confirm these findings. However, I believe in Dr. Shamsuddin's results.

Recent lab studies have shown that IP-6 is effective in preventing and treating liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). Needless to say, this should be big news, since this type of cancer is difficult to treat.

BINDS WITH PROTEINS

As mentioned, IP-6 is found in abundance in whole grains. Why supplement? The problem is that IP-6 has a tendency to bind with proteins in our food. Therefore, for maximum absorption, it should be taken as a food supplement on an empty stomach.

IP-6 and inositol are available in a capsule as "Cell Forte" from Enzymatic Therapy. The price is reasonable, i.e., about 20 cents per 400 mg capsule. The recommended dose on the label is two capsules twice per day, once before breakfast and once between meals, in addition to the everyday diet.

Dr. Shamsuddin recommends that for individuals at high risk of cancer (or kidney stones, fattty liver or cardiovascular disease) the dose should be doubled to 2-4 grams per day. For people with active cancer he recommends 5 to 8 grams per day, in the same way. Eight grams equals 20 pills.

Dr. Shamsuddin has also written a book on this subject, called IP-6, Nature's Revolutionary Cancer-Fighter (Kensington, $5.99).

We also have a Moss Report on the topic of liver cancer as we have for other types of cancer. Also please see my book, Cancer Therapy, for a discussion of 102 other non-conventional cancer treatments.
